The rifts are invisible openings into the unknown beyond, ripped open by the atomic testings in Los Alamos and then in Dresden when the USA nuked it, this is the divergence from our universe to this new, darker one where the rifts are sources of power and technological advancments. All the major nations and theatres are represented that were key in WWII but the timeline differs as technological breakthroughs define new highs and lows across the globe.
